Alternatives
Eagle alternatives
If the asset library became a second job, the answer may not be a better library.
Eagle is excellent at what it does. People look elsewhere when the collection was never meant to be a managed archive in the first place.
01 · About Eagle
First, what Eagle is.
Eagle presents itself as a way to organise design assets: import large numbers of images, sort them into folders, tag them, filter by colour or shape, and browse a serious visual library on the desktop.
For managing an asset library on purpose, it's built for exactly that.
02 · The alternative
Where Shelf is different.
Shelf is a local-first memory layer for the Mac. You save something, Shelf reads it, and later you describe what you half-remember instead of navigating back to it.
- You never file anything
- Shelf assumes you won't. Saves are read, described and grouped by meaning without a folder tree.
- You search by description
- “That dark pricing page with the green accent” is a valid query, because Shelf indexes meaning as well as text.
- Not only images
- Links, PDFs and notes live in the same library, connected to the visuals you saved alongside them.
- Mac-native and local
- Native macOS app, library on your machine, no account, works offline.
Saving is easy. Remembering is the part software keeps leaving to you.
03 · Be honest
When to stay with Eagle.
Eagle is the stronger asset manager, and that job is real work.
- You manage a large, deliberate library of design assets.
- You need colour, shape and format filtering across thousands of images.
- You want folder structures you control precisely.
- You're on Windows, or you move between Windows and Mac.
- You work with fonts, sequences and asset formats a memory app won't handle.
04 · Questions
Common questions.
- Is Shelf an Eagle alternative?
- For finding a screenshot or reference you half-remember, yes. For managing a large, deliberate design asset library with fine-grained filters, Eagle is the stronger tool.
- Does Shelf store my images locally like Eagle?
- Yes. Your library and its index live on your Mac, and the understanding work runs on device.

Shelf V3 is out now
Shelf V3 is the current build. Shelf does not use automatic updates, so download the latest build here and install it over your current version.
This is intentional. Shelf is built around a local-first, privacy-focused philosophy. An automatic updater requires additional background processes, network connections, update infrastructure, and another system with permission to modify the app. We prefer to keep Shelf’s network footprint and background activity as small as possible.
Manual updates keep the process explicit: Shelf only checks the internet when a feature actually needs it, and you decide when a new version is downloaded and installed.
